Arlin Bantam is more than a triple threat. Sure, he acts, sings and dances well. But his creativity goes beyond that. The Stellenbosch University Drama graduate has creativity coming out of his pores and clinging to every strand of his afro.
Arlin recently starred in Rent, a musical which toured South Africa extensively and got rave reviews. Before that, he was in Marthinus Basson directed productions Die Man Wat Wou Wees and Die Gangsters. The stage is not his only canvas though, he has also acted in local and international films and television shows. Arlin also has a career in modelling and writes for the South African online music magazine SA Music Scene. His many talents have always been there, though and his passion for performance is a constant. “I think I’ve wanted to be a performer,” he says “since the first time I heard a show tune. Something about musical theatre has always sat so comfortably with me. So much so that from a very early age it seemed purely sinful to even consider another career choice.”
The ACT | DALRO | Nedbank Scholarship gave Arlin’s studies a kickstart when he won it in 2013. A performance of King of The World at the scholarships finals convinced the judges that Arlin was the most deserving candidate on the day. “I was ecstatic when I got the call that I’d made the final round and even more gobsmacked when I actually won,’” he says.
Registrations for the 2018 ACT | DALRO | Nedbank Scholarships are open until 31 May. Visit the ACT website (http://www.act.org.za/programmes/scholarships.html) to apply!
